![]() ![]() On top of that there’s a clip launcher, which enables nonlinear possibilities and makes Bitwig a very interesting choice for a live performance DAW, where you’re constantly interacting with the playback and how all elements in a song are ordered in time. ![]() As with other DAWs, “Arrange” views presents with a central space where action takes place, with the traditional left-side track inspector, a browser/control room panel in the right side and a lower section dock that houses the note editor, automation panel, device/plug-in controls and also a mixer. “Mix” mode is a traditional mixing console, with inserts, sends, faders and so on. Edit has its own sub-levels, showing gain/pan/pitch envelopes for audio and velocity/expression/CCs/etc when you’re working with MIDI. #Bitwig studio v1 full“Arrange” is the main view, “Mix” opens a full screen mixer and “Edit” switches to the event editor - this is where you’ll tweak MIDI and chop audio. You pick what you need to see when you need to see it by toggling between Edit, Arrange and Mix modes. Bitwig adopts single-window interface design approach, with no floating windows other than the browser you’ll eventually use to search for plug-ins, instruments, samples and presets. The way Bitwig organizes its functions over the user interface and all the choices that go along with that are strong hints that it’s about putting a fast-paced workflow that is very well suited for composition and sequencing. This is a purpose-driven DAW, with a strong focus on composition and electronic music production. Quick Intro: Arguably the last DAW to come out with significant impact, Bitwig enters the game with quite an interesting proposition. Nowadays my DAW use is very much about recording, editing and mixing, but I also take some production, composition and MIDI-related works from time to time and I hope to get back to writing and producing my own music at some point - and this last part is what sparked my interest for a new DAW.ĭisclaimer #2: I couldn’t possibly cover Bitwig's entire scope as this is a tremendous DAW with a ton of features, so I’ll try my best to pass my honest impressions and fair evaluation of Bitwig in the best possible way. #Bitwig studio v1 proI’ve been using DAWs for the past 15 years, started with Cubase and stayed there for over a decade but a few years ago I moved to Pro Tools (for reasons that don’t belong here). During that whole trajectory I’ve done a good bit of engineering for local studios, artists and venues, which provided a good chunk of my income - I'm also a historian and that helps to keep the bills paid. Started as a musician, moved on to electronic music, nowadays I mostly record and mix local artists. I’m currently 34 and had to wear many hats during my almost 20 years dabbling with audio. Disclaimer #1: A bit of background might help, by giving my review it’s necessary context. ![]()
